UHF & CB Radio Frequencies

Post by RF-Bot »

UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency and operates in the 476/477MHz range in the Narrow FM mode. It is used for both personal and business usage. In Tasmania there are some businesses who use UHF on a daily basis for their operations. Personal use is also a big part of UHF CB radio in Tasmania and it's not uncommon to hear all age groups using it at one time or another, most noticeable is on weekends, though one must be warned of the sometimes bad language and carry on which can be heard on it, sometimes not suitable for family listening!

Recently the UHF CB band was expanded from 40 to 80 channels in 12.5KHz spacing's, although older 40 channel UHF radios can still be used, they will not have access to the new additional 40 channel allocations. UHF tends to be line of sight communication, however with the use of 'repeaters' the distance of transmissions can be greatly increased. A repeater is basically a combination of a radio receiver and a radio transmitter placed specifically in a high location, for example a large hill or mountain top, it then receives a signal and re-transmits it back out, so that the initial transmission can cover a much longer distance than normal.

CB refers to communications on 27MHz (11m) and is known as CBRS which stands for Citizens Band Radio Service. Although its popularity has decreased a lot since the '70s, it's still used by a lot of people and tends to peak in activity during the 11 year Solar Cycle, and it seems to have started to increase again in it's usage as of last year (2017). Modes used on 27MHz are AM (Amplitude Modulation), LSB (Lower Side Band) and USB (Upper Side Band), however you may occasionally hear some stations using FM which is not a legal mode of operation, at least not here in Australia, however some still tend to use it.

27MHz communications can be good for local or very long distance chatting and has been known to operate over vast distances, depending on the atmospheric conditions. Certain conditions can produce better and longer distance communication, and this is referred to as 'Skip' which allows stations from far away to be heard, including New Zealand, New Caledonia and in extreme cases even the USA. Some countries may have slightly different bands or step sizes, for example in New Zealand the CB band is on 26MHz, in the UK they have an additional 40 channels between 27.60125 and 27.99125 MHz, making 80 channels all up; whereas in Russia and Poland the channels are actually shifted down 5 KHz, for example, channel 30 is 27.300 MHz, not 27.305 MHz as it is here in Australia.
